JD Takes His First Steps!

// February 22nd, 2010 // 1 Comment » // Family Updates

JD took his first steps tonight – just out of the blue – decided to try walking! Funny how that happens in such a “casual” way for such a monumental milestone. He seems to be satisfied for now with the few steps he took and has since really just resorted to crawling again. Any day now, though, he will be fully walking. Funny how we as parents watch with a mixture of wonder, excitement, nervousness, amazement and a little sadness as we acknowledge our babies are growing up!

I never knew…..

img_0204I never knew before I had kids:

  • that getting into and out of the YMCA with 3 kids would take just as long as actually working out
  • that there are really 12 mealtimes a day
  • that you can indeed function, sometimes even quite well, on less than 3 hours of sleep and several cups of coffee, several nights in a row, even weeks in a row if necessary
  • that everyone sleeping until 7 am is “majorly sleeping in”
  • that baby wipes are incredible stain removers
  • that packing up to go anywhere just for a few errands requires a rather large suitcase of necessities for “just in case”
  • that I would actually enjoy watching “Aladdin” for the 20th time just to hear our kids squeal with delight
  • that being a mom day-in and day-out would be my greatest challenge and my greatest joy all at the same time

“DOO – SMASH”

The other night we took a family trip to the YMCA. After working out and enjoying some alone time together, Dave offered to leave early and grab some movies for us to watch later. What a great idea! I gathered my stuff and headed upstairs to pick up the kids. All was great – the kids were in great moods despite needing supper and we all headed to the elevator. Sophie has a new- found curiousity with elevators lately and wasn’t quite ready to get on upon our arrival to the door. But we all jostled inside eventually and the door closed behind us while I pushed the elevator button to head downstairs. Suddenly, I heard extreme shrieking. I quickly scanned the kids to figure out which one was in pain and realized Sophie’s fingers were stuck in the elevator door! I tried to push the “open door” button and pry the door open myself but nothing happened. It was too late, the elevator had begun to move. I felt helpless; time slowed to a screeching halt; I couldn’t do a thing to get her fingers out and envisioned her poor little fingers crushed forever. Just then, the door opened – but not the door I needed to open. It was the door on the opposite side of the elevator that opened!  I did what any scared desperate mother would do – I yelled for help only to be met with very little to no response, even though several abled bodies were within eyesight. I shot the “if you don’t start running over here within one fraction of a second, I’m going to seriously make your life unpleasant” look that I reserve only for very desperate circumstances. Just then, Sophie pulled her fingers free from the door. I quickly prepared myself to expect the worst before I looked at her tiny fingers. To my complete amazement, they were fully intact, bending and moving despite being a little red – praise God! In just a few moments, Sophie calmed down and we began to pack up. I held and kissed Sophie and asked if she was ok – to which she responded in the cutest yet most pathetic little voice, “Doo(r) – smash!”

The average person living to age 70 has 613,200 hours of life.

That is so much time and yet so very little to live a meaningful life. What will your 613,200 hours be spent on? This week, Hudson and Sophie chose to spend a good chunk of their hours dressed up like ballerinas!

Vacation!!

Summer_vacation_2008_002  Back in our younger years, summers meant something so great, that we spent most other months of the year just dreaming about it. Now that we are older, summers seem to have lost the “relaxed state of mind, body and Summer_vacation_2008_012spirit” that we used to enjoy. In recent years, our summers have been more busy than the rest of the year. Recently, we took two weeks off – from practically everything. It was a refreshing change of pace that, I think, did all of us good! We started our time off by traveling to MO to visit and celebrate with Becky’s younger brother, Ryan, who just finished his PhD (awesome!). Just getting there was an adventure in itself but we’ll save that for another time. After returning from MO, we got to see some great friends who happened to be in town for a night. The rest of our time, we spent lounging by the pool, sightseeing Austin, and visiting the “caves” which Hudson still talks about! We had a great time and are so glad we were able to start off our summer the way summers should start – with time off!

What’s New With the Tilmas?

Family_beach_pic_2 As you may or may not know, we are living in Austin, Texas and loving it! Dave is on staff at Hill Country Bible Church (hcbc.com) and loving that too. It has been so exciting to see God work in amazing ways in this community. HCBC has an amazing vision – check it out on their website if you get a chance – and they are serious about making it a reality, which is quite refreshing, challenging and exhilarating at times.

Thus, there is rarely a dull moment in our lives, however, that probably has more to do with the two little bundles of energy, Hudson (now 3) and Sophie (now 1) that have come into our family. Toby (our dog of 8 years) wasn’t so sure about this “kid” thing until he started reaping the rewards of flying food and little fingers hand-feeding him freshly baked goods. He doesn’t leave their sides now and is acutely aware of their every action and movement.

We are enjoying summer, though hot here in TX. Dave will be going to Toronto in July for a missions trip with HCBC. And we continue to explore Austin, a truly unique and interesting city all its own. We truly do love this area and the ministry God has called us to. Please check back often for updates!
